Southampton Choral Society
Founded in 1943 by J Ambrose Chalk the Society has recently
celebrated its Diamond Anniversary with a performance
of Elgar`s Dream of Gerontius in Southampton Guildhall
and an Anniversary Dinner earlier in the year. Over
this time the choir has performed all the major choral
works from Oratorio to Operatic highlights and Songs
from the Shows. We have sung under a number of well known
guest conductors , Sir Charles Groves, Owain Arwel Hughes,
John Barker, and more recently Jonathan Willcocks. We
are currently led by Aidan Fairlie, Head of Music and
Performing Arts, at Bournemouth University, who succeeded
Derek Goodger our Hon, President. The Choir performs
four concerts each year, as well as appearing at Civic
Functions, and has a Wedding Choir which sings for weddings
around Southampton.
Tudor Roses –
Ladies Barbershop Harmony Chorus
The
Tudor Roses Ladies Barbershop Harmony Chorus is celebrating
its 10th Anniversary this year. Based in Winchester,
the chorus has a membership of 40 ladies who all enjoy
the fun of unaccompanied 4 part harmony singing, and
the friendship that belonging to the chorus brings. The
chorus was founded by 2 experienced barbershop singers,
who on moving to Winchester, found there was no local
barbershop chorus for ladies, and so decided to start
their own! From an initial core of 15 members, the chorus
has gone from strength to strength and now has over
40 members. Under the leadership of their enthusiastic
Musical Director, Di Crosfield, the chorus now competes
in national competitions as well as performing locally.
The chorus is affiliated to LABBS (Ladies Association
of British Barbershop Singers) and has a repertoire
of songs from traditional barbershop songs to more modern
arrangements such as Barbara-Ann.
Jazzmanix Gospel Singers
The
Jazzmanix Gospel Singers formed in October 2004 as an
offshoot of Southampton University's jazz and gospel
choir, Jazzmanix. They sing a wide range of material
from traditional spirituals to modern day gospel fusions,
all performed in their own unique style. Their musical
director, Eve Skinner, is in the final year of her music
degree and also assists in directing the main choir.
Their debut performance was in the Turner Sims Concert
Hall in December, and up and coming dates can be found
on the Jazzmanix web site.
West End Singers
West
End Singers were formed in September 1988, to sing mainly
modern music. They are a mixed voiced choir currently
having 33 singing members with ages ranging from 18
to 75 years singing music in three/four part harmony
style. The group performs songs they rehearse from memory.
The choir's first appearance was to combine with local
choirs as 'backing singers' at a Royal Gala, held at
the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton. More concerts followed
and the choir built up a reputation for polished and
sensitive singing. Twice winners of the Coronation Cup
(1989 and 1990) and winners of the Orchard Trophy, (1998)
awarded at The Gosport Music Festival and also winners
with honours at the 1998 Southampton Festival of Music
and Drama. April 1991 saw the choir travel to Temple
Terrace, Florida as part of a cultural exchange set
up by Eastleigh Borough Twinning Association. The sister
communities of Eastleigh and Temple Terrace have stayed
close and 1992 saw a group of American citizens visit
Eastleigh. West End Singers returned from Florida in
October 2000, where they took part in the celebrations
to mark the 75th Birthday of Temple Terrace.
